Saul Chan Htoo Sang

(born in 1998) is an emerging artist and filmmaker based in Yangon and Chiang Mai. Saul’s journey as an artist began before he realized it. Growing up in the heart of Yangon, Saul was always drawn towards the performance artists, abstract painters, contemporary poets, street pho- tographers, and documentary filmmakers around him. From 2014 to 2017, Saul organized monthly Open Mic Nights with a handful of his friends on his parent’s rooftop, after attending such gatherings at Nawaday Tharlar Gallery. Around the same time, Saul’s learned the basics of filmmaking through an internship at Tagu Films. Later, he pursued an independent major in Ethnographic & Media studies at Grinnell College in Iowa, USA, graduating in 2023. His first short documentary film, Underneath My Chin (2020), was screened at 10th Waltham Film Festival. After two years in the making, Saul’s next film, “Portraits of the Wound” will be released soon. Currently, Saul’s working as a freelance filmmaker while serving as a creative director for Yoyamay.
